Leaky Brakes 101, What They Are, What They Aren’t

Date: Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 7:30pm- 9:30pm
Participants: Parents and teachers
Location: Grace Christian School, 497 Millgrove Side Rd, Millgrove, Ontario
This is an overview presentation intended to improve understanding of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). We will also explore the role of Sensory Processing Dysfunction, and Reactive Rage which are often associated with these disorders. We will look at the impact these disorders and their often misunderstood symptoms can have on families, schools and communities.
In the Brake Shop Clinic we use youth friendly language to assist with understanding these complex Neurodevelopmental disorders, we refer to them as ‘Leaky Brakes’. Much like a car has a braking system to help it stop, so do we; our brakes are in our brain. Leaky Brakes can occur over our movements and sounds, thoughts, attention and impulses, senses and behaviour. Leaky Brakes are not a result of poor parenting, lack of motivation or intelligence.
This presentation will assist in increasing knowledge of ‘Leaky Brake’ disorders and strategies that that may be effective, it will decrease misperceptions and misunderstanding, which often does significant harm to the child or youth. Valuable resources will be avaialble which can be used in the home and shared with community agencies and schools.
